In response to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s (MHCLG) statement on Local Government Reorganisation, CIPFA Director of Public Financial Management Iain Murray, said:
“We welcome the Government’s commitment to creating sustainable and streamlined unitary councils that can effectively lead their communities and improve local public services.
“Shifting power away from Whitehall towards local authorities is a positive step that aligns with CIPFA’s vision of devolved, accountable governance. The funding allocated to support the development of proposals, and the introduction of a consistent financial template by CIPFA with F3 Consultancy, will be invaluable in helping councils produce robust, evidence-based plans.
“We recognise the complexity and scale of this reorganisation. It is crucial that local leaders work collaboratively, sharing data and insights to develop solutions that reflect the unique needs of their communities while maintaining essential services throughout the process.
“Local authorities must balance transformation with continuity. This reorganisation is an opportunity to build a more resilient, responsive sector — capable of supporting community wellbeing and long-term growth.
“As the sector navigates these changes, CIPFA remains committed to providing expertise and support to ensure new authorities are set up for long-term success, resilience, and public accountability.”
